Cathy Dandy is the Director, Parent and Youth Engagement at Kinark Child and Family Services. She has been a passionate advocate for parent and youth voice for over 15 years.
Parent and youth engagement is a dynamic activity at Kinark Child and Family Services. Although my job has existed officially for about a year, our effort to work with parents and youth and hear their voices has been going on for years.
One of the most exciting facets of this work is our long-standing partnership with the provincial parent organization, Parents for Children’s Mental Health (PCMH – www.pcmh.ca). PCMH has been supporting parents across Ontario for 15 years by providing workshops that help parents advocate for their children and build a better children’s mental health system in their communities. They also help parents to connect with one another and feel less isolated and overwhelmed.
It has been exciting to watch PCMH grow and Kinark has played a role in that by offering our parents the opportunity to attend the PCMH workshops. We also are working with PCMH on a project that will provide strong support to families entering into service at Kinark. Stay tuned for more information on that one.
Finally, Kinark is convinced that real improvements in the funding for children’s mental health comes about as parents, youth and families speak out about the rights of all children and youth to get help when and where they need it. We continue to support PCMH in its attempts to bring this message to the Ontario public.
At its Annual General Meeting in September, PCMH honoured me with their inaugural Champion Award. It was a wonderful testament to the work that Kinark is doing to support families and an inspiration to continue to build a culture of engagement throughout the agency.
Parents for Children's Mental Health as Cathy mentions does have a long-standing relationship with Kinark, and from our perspective, could not be happier and prouder of that relationship, or more grateful for the support Kinark has provided over the years, especially in this last year with Cathy Dandy as the Director, Family Engagement.
It is true - Cathy was given our Champion Award at our 2009 AGM, and I would like to share with you what we shared that day. The category of Award was for Partnership - and really could have easily been mentorship. Sylvia Naumovski, President PCMH, and I met Cathy fairly unexpectedly at one of the Children's Mental Health Ontario Conferences. She had introduced herself to us and shared with us a description of her role at Kinark and some of her ideas around Family Engagement. We arranged to meet for lunch, where the three of us chatted and listened to an exchange of ideas. After that lunch, Sylvia and I said, well - that was a neat lady, we should probably contact her and discuss some of our ideas and get her input and thoughts. So we contacted Cathy, set up an appointment, and from that appointment on PCMH has taken strides together with Kinark and Cathy that likely we would not have been able to accomplish in the same manner without. Cathy with her expertise as a very powerful advocate for children and youth has mentored us through many events, guest speaking presentations, and one of the most important events of our 2009 year - a Press Conference at Queen's Park. A daunting task we thought at the time, but with Cathy's help and guidance a true success. What is very special about the staff of Kinark and Cathy, they truly do support the voice of families and youth, and never ask to put words in our mouths. They support our ideas, and assist with the how to's, but do not ever influence or try to craft our messaging in ways that prevent the true family voice from being heard.
PCMH believes Kinark to be leaders in true family engagement, and thank them for their ongoing support, and belief in families and children and youth.
Sarah Cannon, Executive Director, PCMH
